Kinja'd!!!

I'm tired of giving myself an excuse.

I have owned a 74' Datsun 260z. Right now it's currently under garage mode for the past 2 years. Why? Why have I neglected such a thing? Well a little background history. I bought this in honor of my dad who had passed away. I've done quite a lot of work around it (installed triple webers, stripped the paint, etc.) and what's holding me back is the fact that I worked on this car with my cousin... who has recently passed away as of last year. Every time I touch it, I think of him working on it together and it still haunts me.

Has anyone gone through this kind of situation? A project car suddenly postpones because of something tragic?

Sorry to be a puss. I've never dealt with this situation before.

nah man, not being a puss.

It may be better to either work on it in his and your dad's honor...or have a shop finish it for you so you can jump ahead to the enjoying it in their name portion.

Do it with the memories, not in spite of them. Do it for your dad and your cousin, not without them.

My dad has this same problem. We have a 1964 Impala and a 1972 Cadillac that are literally in showroom condition... sitting under covers. (the cadillac only has about 60k miles on it) The reason he won't touch them? His dad and mom passed away. Now they are sitting and rotting away. I keep telling him that his dad would have NEVER wanted that, but he won't listen.

I'm sorry for your losses, man. Get back to work on that Z. If they were still around, your dad and cousin would much rather see that thing being brought back to its glory than sitting gathering dust in a garage!

Through the completion of this project, you will be honoring the memory of both your father and your cousin. It will become a rolling, roaring monument to them both. Their memories should not haunt you, no, they should inspire you to push through this and get it on the road in their honor. If it was my car, I would have a little dedication to them somewhere on the car. Maybe in the engine bay (close to the "heart" of the car) or something like that. Try not to let their memory hold you back, let the amazing times you had working on this car with your cousin in order to honor your dad help move you forward.

I'm sorry for your losses, man. But this is a wonderful way to memorialize them both is something that you will be intimately interacting with and that will bring you joy for a long, long time.

Losses can be difficult. I have dealt with many, but I see everything I do that reminds me of them as doing it for their memory. How else will that person live on in our lives without doing the things that make us think of them? The project will be difficult but the finished product is well worth the initial pain.
